Problem statement:
Emerging smallholder farmers typically struggle to grow their farming operations to sustainable commercial levels due to several factors, including small farm sizes (usually no more than a few hectares); lack of access to finance, production inputs, technical expertise and business support; an inability to aggregate produce to meet commercial supply demands; and poor access to lucrative markets.
|
Partner(s):
Technoserve partners with Standard Bank, the Thembani International Guarantee Fund and smallholder farmers in the provinces in which the intervention has a presence.
|
Intervention:
The Small Farmer Commercialisation initiative seeks to address the most prevalent constraints for smallholder farmers in South Africa and unlock their potential to become commercially viable enterprises over the medium term. The intervention plans to identify 1 500 eligible smallholder farmers to participate in the Technoserve initiative. The selected smallholder famers will have sufficient natural endowments to enable success, including access to land, irrigation, suitable agro-climatic conditions and a desire to farm. Participants will benefit from continued access to finance, production inputs, training, technical and mentorship support, improved agronomic practices, increased yields and access to local markets (E-Fresh markets) and national offtake arrangements secured by Technoserve, thus becoming sustainable, job-creating enterprises.
