Problem statement:
Over 300 000 youth join the labour market every year with little or no prospects of getting a job because many of them lack the necessary skills needed in formal industries. Many begin to engage in the informal sector where they operate at a survivalist level. The majority of people in the informal economy are women with limited opportunities to access other forms of income.
Partner(s):
The Job Creation Through Enterprise Development project is an initiative by Hand in Hand South Africa and supported by Hand in Hand International, Hand in Hand Sweden and the Norwegian Agency for Development Corporation to create an enabling informal sector that alleviates poverty and creates jobs.
Intervention:
The project aims to address informal sector challenges through its Self-Help Group Enterprise Development Programme, which forms self-help groups that start their own micro/small enterprises to escape poverty and start generating income. By approaching job creation through enterprise development and self-reliance, this project has the potential to change the status quo of job hunting to one of entrepreneurship. This will ultimately lead to self-reliance and local economic development. The initiative introduces a more organised and systematic approach to entrepreneurship in the informal sector by focusing on micro credit, enterprise development facilitation and capacity building. Through this support, the enterprises will grow, market linkages will be formed, and mentorship and coaching between the formal and informal sectors will in turn contribute to more jobs and growth in the economy.
Expected results:
New permanent jobs 6 000
New short-term jobs 33
Training completed 6 000
