Problem statement:
Unemployment and poverty are major threats to South Africa’s stability. The South African economy is battling to meaningfully address the aspirations of millions of its people, many of whom are either unemployed, working informally or in low-income jobs.
Partner(s):
Awethu is a company that was set up six years ago to combine ideas, people and capital to build fast-growing SMMEs in South Africa. Project partners include ADvTECH, Discovery Holdings, Edward Nathan Sonnenberg, Ireland-Davenport and Standard Bank’s Tutuwa Community Investment.
Intervention:
Awethu believes that the best way to harness natural talent and ensure people move out of poverty is through entrepreneurship and small business growth. The project identifies high-potential entrepreneurs from these vulnerable groups, equips them with the entrepreneurship skills most crucial to their success, and connects them with the resources that will allow them to lead their own communities to economic prosperity. The overall objective of this project is to support 500 entrepreneurs in their business growth and to create an additional 1 000 jobs.
Expected results:
New permanent jobs 1 000
New short-term jobs 248
Training completed 1 568
